This 1986 F150 XLT Explorer is unrestored and has traveled just 881 miles. The idea in a nutshell was to discount popular options to drive sales while not circumventing the more upscale packages. Through the years, the Explorer package was offered with a number of sub packages, each building upon the other with more accessories and even special colors and upholstery patterns.
For all intents and purposes, the Explorer trim was a kind of luxury-sport trim offered at a lower price point than the more upscale Ranger and Ranger XLT models.
Each year, the Explorer trim was different than the last, and production of Explorer F-Series trucks was always limited. The Explorer trim was first introduced on the F-Series Ford pickups for the 1968 model year, ceasing availability at the end of the 1986 model year.
